Messrs Ibrahim Sani and Saidu Yusuf Zakari of the National Centre for the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Education(SMASE) have attended a knowledge co-creation programme in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. The workshop, which took place between June 2 and June 30 was organised by the Zambia’s Ministry of General Education in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In a report obtained from Sani, indicated that 16 African countries participated including Nigeria. He said the training, which was for teachers of Science and Mathematics aimed at critical curriculum analysis to enhance teacher professional growth through lesson study. The lesson study, according to the report, is a problem-solving process of professional development for teachers which has been practiced in Japan and Zambia at all levels.

“The whole training was centered on critical analysis of the curriculum through planning, demonstrating and assessing lesson by teachers”, it said.

The report said however, that part of the challenges observed was that participants, who attended the basic course from Nigeria did not step-down the programme to the targeted groups. It recommended that policy makers should be sensitised and called for the introduction of lesson study to pre-service teachers.
