NTI CONDUCTS TEACHING PRACTICE EXERCISE FOR STUDENTS-TEACHERS

The Institute had between June 11 and 15, conducted a nationwide teaching practice exercise in a bid to expose its students to teaching techniques. Mr.Yakubu Akaaba Momoh, the  Director Field Operations and Students Services,(FOSS) told The Bulletin that prior to the exercise, a seminar meant for that purpose took place between on May 7  and  11.

He explained that the exercise was for Cycle Four Students of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and 400 level Degree pointing out that the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education(PGDE) students would have their own in October. According to him, the Institute is trying to come to terms with the guidelines of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). The Director said teaching practice is a very important exercise that exposes teacher trainees to the practical techniques of the profession. A document on the exercise indicated that the exercise is a very important component of teacher preparation through Distance Learning System by the Institute.

“It makes the teacher trainees have a real-life experience of the classroom which exposes them to opportunities of actualising the teaching techniques/methodologies and also practicing the theories of teaching learnt during tutorial contacts”.

According to it, the objectives of the teaching practice monitoring exercise is to ascertain that the students were properly briefed, on the expectations of the teaching practice exercise and ascertain that they are carrying out the exercise and that they are being supervised and moderated as planned. The monitoring officers were expected to discuss and guide student-teachers on areas of strengths and weaknesses, check student’s identity card, evidence of payment, students’ timetable, observe, analyse and give feedback on all teaching practice activities in the state.
