Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into Pivotal Teacher Training Programme (PTTP) by Distance learning system (DLS) for 2017/2018.
The Federal Ministry of Education in response to the shortage of professional teachers for the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria launched in 1999, mandated a Committee of Educationists to design the Pivotal Teacher Training Programme (PTTP). The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) was thereafter mandated to implement the programme aimed at fast-tracking the training and production of professional teachers for effective implementation of the UBE programme. The Institute trained two sets of students under the PTTP free of charge (fully funded by the Federal Government). The PTTP was discontinued after “two sets” were trained and certificated. Thereafter, there have been calls and requests by the State Governments to re-introduce the abolished Teacher Training Colleges. The National Council on Education’s (NCE) meeting in Minna (2004) instead of re-establishing the Teacher Training Colleges resolved that States should partner with NTI in running the PTTP. This was re-affirmed at the NCE meeting in Sokoto (2009) which has given credence and boost in the implementation of the new PTTP by the Institute. Some States have, since, embraced the PTTP. By 2015 Academic Session, twenty (20) States are currently running the programme.
